Membership categories
Choose the category that reflects your position
All individual categories provide the same Member status. Reduced prices recognise career stage, study and retirement; they do not create a lower grade of Membership.
Individual Member — £120 / 12 months+
The standard annual category for adults who do not use a reduced-fee route. It is open internationally and does not require UK nationality or residence.
Early Career Member — £60 / 12 months+
For people normally within ten years of entering their field. Career breaks, caring responsibilities, disability, illness, service and displacement are taken into account.
Student Member — £36 / 12 months+
For adults currently enrolled in education, an apprenticeship or recognised professional training. Current enrolment evidence may be requested.
Retired Member — £60 / 12 months+
For people retired from their main full-time paid career. Part-time, voluntary, advisory and non-executive work does not automatically prevent eligibility.
Institutional Member — from £1,500 per year+
A contracted route for organisations. The agreement defines contacts, programme places, term, VAT, data responsibilities and permitted use of the Institutional Member description.
Institutional Membership does not confer individual Membership or Fellowship and does not buy influence over admissions, honours, publications or research.
Membership in the Academy
Members join a multidisciplinary community spanning the arts, humanities, sciences and professions. The programme provides a route into Academy communications, events and public-interest activity.
- A digital membership record and Community account.
- Member communications and designated online lectures and activities.
- Published member rates for selected events, programmes and publications.
- Divisions, interest groups, volunteering and public-engagement calls.
- Optional inclusion in the public Member Directory.
Fees and fee support
Subscriptions run for 12 months from activation. The final total and any applicable tax are shown before payment.

How to apply
Membership is completed through a separate application page. No proposer, referee, committee election or prior UKAAS status is required.
- Choose the category that reflects your current position.
- Provide legal identity, contact details and current role, study or professional position.
- Confirm the category declaration and review the final annual fee.

- Set auto-renewal, marketing and public-directory choices separately.

Payment, checks and activation
The selected category, annual term and final total are shown before payment. Activation follows successful payment and any proportionate category or identity check.
- Most applicants are not asked for additional evidence.
- Evidence may be requested for a reduced-fee category, identity discrepancy, fraud or sanctions concern.
- A mistaken category may be corrected before activation; it does not automatically invalidate the application.
- Marketing consent and public-directory visibility are not conditions of Membership.
Renewal and cancellation
- Auto-renewal is off unless the applicant actively selects it.
- Renewal reminders are planned for 30 and 7 days before collection.
- Turning off renewal preserves the current paid term.
- Online cancellation requests may be submitted within 14 days, subject to the published rules and statutory rights.
Scope of Member status
Membership is a contractual programme membership. It is not Fellowship, a degree, a regulated qualification, a professional licence, Companies Act company membership, share ownership or an endorsement of the member's work.
Becoming a Member does not guarantee, accelerate or confer Fellowship. Members and non-members use the same published Fellow threshold.
Membership FAQs
Answers to the principal questions about eligibility, payment and active Membership.
Do I need a proposer, referee or recommendation?+
No. Membership is an open application route based on the selected category declaration, acceptance of the terms and payment.
Can I join from outside the United Kingdom?+
Yes. Individual Membership is open internationally and does not require UK nationality or residence.
Which category should I choose?+
Use Individual Member unless Early Career, Student or Retired accurately describes your current position. All individual categories confer the same Member status; the reduced prices do not create a lower grade.
Will I need to provide evidence?+
Usually not. UKAAS may request proportionate evidence for reduced-fee eligibility, identity, fraud prevention, sanctions screening or a material discrepancy.
When does Membership become active?+
After the completed application, successful payment and any necessary proportionate check. The activation confirmation records the category and term.
Is auto-renewal compulsory?+
No. Auto-renewal is off unless it is actively selected. Turning it off does not shorten the current paid term.
Can I cancel after joining?+
An online cancellation request may be submitted within 14 days. The published Cancellation and Refund Rules, any informed request for immediate service and statutory rights apply.
Does Membership include Fellowship or a post-nominal?+
No. Members do not use a UKAAS post-nominal. Fellowship is a separate evidence-based application assessed against its own published threshold.
Must I appear in the public Directory?+
No. Member Directory participation is optional and private by default. Declining a listing does not reduce the active Membership.
