Fellowship

Assessment recognises different forms of achievement across academic, creative, clinical, technical, entrepreneurial, professional and public-service fields. Evidence is considered in disciplinary, career and opportunity context.

• Sustained achievement in one or more fields represented by the Academy.
• A meaningful, verifiable contribution beyond the ordinary expectations of the candidate's role.
• Normally around ten years of substantial practice, or a shorter record with unusually clear and independently verifiable impact.
• Good professional standing and willingness to observe the Code of Conduct.
• No universal doctorate requirement; equivalent creative, clinical, technical, entrepreneurial and public-service achievement is recognised on evidence.

The route does not change the threshold, decision authority or standing of the resulting Fellowship. There is no proposer requirement for a direct application.

• Direct application — the candidate submits their own evidence.
• Nomination — an eligible nominator brings a candidate to UKAAS, after which the candidate completes the standard evidence record.
• Academy identification — UKAAS may invite a candidate to enter the same assessment.

• Research and scholarship: selected publications, citations, funded work, peer review, research leadership or documented influence.
• Creative and cultural practice: major works, exhibitions, performances, commissions, critical reception or recognised public value.
• Clinical and professional practice: service improvement, standards, leadership, training, measurable outcomes or professional contribution.
• Technology and industry: adopted innovation, patents, products, technical leadership, enterprise outcomes or sector influence.
• Public service and policy: programmes, advice, institutional reform, public outcomes or independently documented impact.

Membership status, payments, donations, sponsorship relationships and commercial participation do not form part of the assessment. Fellowship is not awarded by quota, purchase or automatic progression.

• Administrative review confirms completeness, eligibility and identity.
• Evidence is verified and routed by Division and Section to authorised reviewers.
• Reviewers record expertise, conflicts and a reasoned recommendation.
• The Fellowship Committee decides whether the published threshold is met.
• The outcome may approve, decline or request further information.

An approved candidate must accept the Fellowship Regulations and Code of Conduct before Active Fellow status is created. Before acceptance, the candidate may not use FAAS(UK), receive a public directory record or represent that Fellowship has been conferred.

There is no charge to apply for, be assessed for, accept or hold Fellowship.

FAAS(UK) is the approved post-nominal for an Active Fellow. It may be used while the record remains current and verifiable. Fellowship does not lapse for non-payment.

Active Fellows receive the Academy's standard digital community access, Fellows' meetings, relevant disciplinary networks and Academy communications without an Academy Membership subscription. Separately priced events or services remain optional and do not affect Fellowship standing.

Where a person already holds paid Academy Membership, Fellowship takes effect immediately on acceptance. The current paid period continues and automatic Membership renewal is disabled.

Standing may be suspended, ended or revoked only under the governing rules and fair process. The Directory and verification record must reflect the current position.

Fellowship is an Academy recognition. It is not a degree, regulated qualification, professional licence, statutory registration, public appointment, royal honour or endorsement of every statement or activity of a Fellow.

A review may address a material procedural error, undisclosed conflict, mistaken evidence or a decision outside the published criteria. It is not a second assessment merely because the candidate disagrees with the outcome. Instructions and time limits accompany the decision.
