Section profile

Disciplinary definition

The Section studies how public problems are defined and how institutions design, implement and evaluate collective responses.

Within UKAAS, this Section provides the primary disciplinary context for application classification, evidence review, directory filtering and programmes that fall within its stated remit.

Academic scope

Principal subjects

  • Policy analysis, design and evaluation
  • Public administration and institutional capacity
  • Regulation, public finance and service delivery
  • Local, national and transnational governance

Core questions

Questions that organise the Section

  • How do issues reach the public agenda?
  • Which institutional arrangements deliver legitimate and effective action?
  • How should evidence, values and uncertainty inform policy choices?

Methods and evidence

Recognised approaches

Method is considered in relation to the question, object of study and claimed conclusion. Evidence should identify assumptions, uncertainty, limitations and the basis on which a result can be checked.

  • Policy and programme evaluation
  • Institutional and administrative analysis
  • Comparative case and implementation research
  • Economic, statistical and participatory methods

Interdisciplinary relationships

Related Sections

Cross-disciplinary work remains assigned to one primary Section for consistent administration and review. One secondary Division and Section may be recorded where the submitted evidence establishes a substantial second disciplinary context.

Fellowship allocation

Use in applications and review

An applicant chooses one primary Division and Section. The selection routes the case to relevant expertise; it does not decide the outcome. UKAAS may correct the classification where another Section is better placed to evaluate the principal body of work.

Active Fellow profiles may display “Classification: SBS · PPA”. The codes must not be appended to FAAS(UK) or represented as an additional title, degree or honour.

Institutional boundaries

Academic classification, not external authority

The Section is an internal UKAAS academic classification. It does not accredit programmes, license practice, confer a degree, establish professional registration or imply endorsement by an external classification body.

Fellowship approval remains a central UKAAS decision under the published threshold and verification process. Division or Section allocation does not alter £369 Annual Fellowship, optional £4,500 Life Fellowship, the Fellow title or FAAS(UK).
