The division between the arts and the sciences is often treated as a division between imagination and evidence. That account is historically crude and institutionally unhelpful. Artistic practice is constrained by material, form, technique, history and public interpretation. Scientific work depends on judgement about questions, models, uncertainty, representation and consequence. Neither proceeds through method alone.
The case for a common institutional space is not that these practices are identical. It is that contemporary problems require their differences to become mutually intelligible.

Different disciplines organise attention differently
Every field determines what counts as a relevant observation, an admissible inference and a satisfactory explanation. The natural sciences may privilege measurement, reproducibility and causal models. The humanities may reconstruct meaning from language, context, archives and contested interpretation. The arts may test perception, form and experience through making. Professional practice must act under legal, ethical, organisational and material constraints before uncertainty has disappeared.
These are not stages in a hierarchy from subjective to objective. They are disciplined ways of organising attention. Their limits become visible when a problem moves from description to interpretation, or from discovery to use.
A common institution should therefore ask more than whether a claim is correct within its originating field. It should also ask what assumptions travel with the claim, which forms of knowledge have been excluded, who bears the consequences of application and what remains uncertain.
Artificial intelligence makes the institutional gap visible
Artificial intelligence brings this need into sharp relief. Its development draws on mathematics, computer science, engineering and statistics. Its outputs enter medicine, research, administration, culture, education, media, design and everyday professional judgement. Technical performance is essential, but performance alone does not determine whether a system is reliable, intelligible, lawful or socially acceptable.
Humanities scholarship can identify the historical categories and power relations encoded in data and institutions. The arts can expose how synthetic images, language and performance alter authorship, perception and cultural value. Law and professional ethics can define duties, liability, consent and acceptable use. Scientific evaluation can test performance, robustness and error. Practitioners can show how a system behaves under the pressures of real work rather than controlled demonstration.
No one of these perspectives can substitute for the others. A shared setting allows them to enter the same inquiry before technical or institutional choices become difficult to reverse.
Evidence and interpretation are not opposites
Evidence never arrives without a question, a method of collection and a convention of representation. Interpretation is not permission to disregard evidence; it is the disciplined work of determining what evidence can support.
This distinction matters in public reasoning. Quantitative results can be precise while answering a narrow question. A compelling narrative can make consequences visible while exceeding what the available evidence establishes. Institutions need both the capacity to test claims and the capacity to examine framing, meaning and omission.
Dialogue across fields is most valuable when it improves the terms of judgement. The scientist may be required to state uncertainty in a form that a decision-maker can use. The historian may need to distinguish archival absence from evidence of absence. The artist may make perceptible an experience that conventional reporting fails to register. The professional may identify a lawful or practical constraint that changes the significance of an otherwise persuasive proposal.
Creativity is a mode of inquiry
Creativity is sometimes added to science and professional practice as a communication device after the substantive work is complete. That is too limited. Creative practice can formulate questions, reveal patterns, construct models, test counterfactuals and expose the sensory or emotional dimensions of a public problem.
The sciences are also creative. Experimental design, mathematical abstraction, instrument development and theory construction require disciplined invention. The relevant distinction is not between creative and non-creative fields, but between forms of creativity that are accountable to different materials, methods and communities of judgement.
An institution spanning the arts and sciences can examine these forms without reducing one to illustration for the other.
Ethics must enter before application
Ethical review is ineffective when it appears only after a programme, technology or public narrative has already acquired institutional momentum. Questions of purpose, proportionality, consent, access, foreseeable harm and distribution belong near the beginning of inquiry.
The arts and humanities contribute methods for understanding values, language, memory and lived experience. Scientific and technical fields contribute methods for testing causal claims and material feasibility. Professional practice identifies duties that arise under law, codes, fiduciary relationships and organisational responsibility.
Bringing these resources together does not guarantee agreement. It improves the quality of disagreement by requiring reasons to be stated, evidence to be identified and consequences to be considered by more than one community.
Professional practice closes the institutional circuit
The movement from knowledge to public consequence passes through professions and organisations. Clinicians, engineers, curators, lawyers, designers, public servants, technologists, entrepreneurs and cultural practitioners make decisions under constraints that differ from those of a laboratory, studio or archive.
Their experience can test whether a proposal is workable, safe and intelligible. It can also reveal how standards behave when incentives, scarce resources and competing duties are present. A shared institutional space should not treat practice as the passive implementation of ideas produced elsewhere. Practice is a source of knowledge and a site of accountability.
What a shared institution must preserve
An institution that crosses disciplines must resist the temptation to produce a single vocabulary or method. Its task is to maintain conditions under which differences can be examined without being erased.
That requires a principal disciplinary home for specialist assessment; clear statements of method and evidence; disclosure of conflicts and funding; distinction between institutional positions and attributed argument; and a public record that permits correction. It also requires restraint about what follows from agreement. A productive exchange may refine a question or expose uncertainty without producing a joint conclusion.
The institutional value lies in making such work durable. A conference can create a moment of contact. A shared academy can preserve standards, relationships, records and routes for continued scrutiny.
A space for responsible encounter
The arts and sciences need a common institutional space because public problems do not respect the boundaries by which expertise is organised. They also need it because no discipline should be asked to surrender the standards that make its contribution reliable.
The appropriate ambition is not synthesis at any price. It is responsible encounter: evidence open to interpretation, interpretation answerable to evidence, creativity joined to consequence, and professional judgement subject to ethical and public scrutiny.
